Add (addition)
Indicates the value of presbyopia, the addition for good close-up vision. The value, for example +2 dptr., is added to the spherical correction of close-up vision.
Aberrometer
An instrument which measures the total refractive error of the optical system of the eye. A wave of parallel rays of light is sent into the eye and focused on the retina. Upon exiting the eye, the reflected light ray is sent through an array of lenses and recorded with a CCD camera. An eye with ideal vision will reflect the rays of light in a straight wave front. Each deviation of the straight wave represents a refractive error which can be corrected on the cornea with a laser. This requires a flying spot laser and an eye tracker, which is safe against rotation errors. This enables a "customized ablation", independent of any potential location errors.
Accommodation
Ability of the eye lens to change shape to focus on close objects.
AcrySof
Phakic anterior chamber lens produced by OPHTEC.
Acufocus
Corneal implant for presbyotic patients. Implanted in only one eye, it allows some independence from reading glasses. See also presbyopia correction.
AcrySof ReStor
See AcrySof. The AcrySof ReStor lens is a multifocal lens. See also presbyopia correction.
AK, Astigmatic Keratectomy
Corneal procedure, reducing astigmatism by placing small, arch shaped incisions at the periphery of the cornea.
Artiflex
Phakic anterior chamber lens produced by OPHTEC.
Artisan Lens
Phakic anterior chamber lens, which is implanted into the anterior chamber, between the cornea and the iris, as an additional lens. Produced by OPHTEC.
Astigmatism
is always present if the corneal surface is different from the ideal ball-shape curvature.
Axis
Indicates the axis of your astigmatism in degrees. |
