After reading through our patient information or visitingo one of our free informational evenings, you will make an appointment for an exam and consultation at one of our specialty clinics. Before making an appointment for a exam and a consultation at one of our clinics, we offer you further means of information: our detailed brochure on refractive surgery as well as special evenings where our experienced ophthalmologists are happy to deducate their time to answering all your questions.
You will receive a detailed eye exam and consultation in the clinic, and the ophthalmologist determines whether a procedure of refractive surgery is an option for you.
The ophthalmologist will perform an exact and detailed eye exam and take different measurements on your eye to determine your individual refractive error. The results of this exam provide the basis for the correction.
Based on the results of this exam, the ophthalmologist will discuss with you whether the surgical correction of your individual refractive error is a true alternative for you.
Your individual wishes and needs for the surgery will be addressed extensively as well.
The ophthalmologist discusses different treatment alternatives for the correction of your refractive error and determines if methods such as laser surgery or lens implants may be applied in your case. After this consultation, you can make an appointment for a preoperative exam.
For the preoperative exam, it is important that the surface of your cornea is in its original shape.
Therefore, soft contact lenses should not be worn for two weeks and hard contact lenses for three weeks prior to this exam.
Because your pupils will be dilated after the exam, you will not be able to drive for several hours. The preoperative exam will take approximately 2 hours. Different methods are used to measure your eye and to analyze your specific refractive error in detail.
For your surgery appointment, you should arrange for somebody to accompany you, since you will not be able to drive home yourself with eye bandages. Please do not wear any makeup on the day of surgery.
Generally, procedures of refractive surgery are outpatient procedures, however, inpatient treatment is possible if medical circumstances require it. Local anesthesia with eye drops makes the surgery painless.
Laser eye surgery is usually performed on both eyes on the same day, right one after the other, using two different sterile sets of instruments. However, if you will undergo a lens procedure, one eye will be operated on first. The second operation will follow 4 -6 weeks after.
After the surgery, you will receive important information and instructions for postoperative care along with a prescription for necessary medication.
Several appointments for shorter and longer postoperative checkups will be necessary and can be made in either the eye clinic itself or upon request and in cooperation with your surgeon at the office of your primary care ophthalmologist.
Regular checkups ensure a healing process without complications. It is important for the success of your treatment that you abide by the scheme of the postoperative therapy.
